The Great Hurricane traveled unseen offshore as it made its way up the eastern seaboard, evading detection by the U.S. Weather Bureau after it passed Jacksonville, Florida. Forecasters assumed it would move out to sea, as most tropical storms did when they encountered the cooler air and water temperature in the region, but GH38 continued heading up the coast, aimed directly at Long Island. (from Hurricane! by Joe McCarthy [New York: American Heritage Press, 1969])

The Duryea dock on Fort Pond Bay was a model of the flourishing Long Island fishing industry in 1938. Helen Bengtson was at work in the Duryea store and office the morning before the hurricane as fishermen came through pondering ominous signs in the weather. In a matter of hours the neatly stowed boats and stacks of lobster traps would be blown to bits. (East Hampton Town Marine Museum)
